AWARD FOR DAY ONE

On Friday 30 November 2007 Day One Radio & Heart of the Nation Productions were awarded by the Christian Broadcasting Council their 2007 Silver Media Award for the Best Christian Music Radio Programme for our weekly contemporary Christian music chart show that we make in association with Wesley Owen.

The Gold award went to a large radio broadcaster who have a rather larger budget for programme production than we currently have!!

Wesley Owen/STL is the UK's largest Christian book/music retailer and they also supply and/or fulfill many of the mail order operations of various broadcasters.

Day One Radio has announced that we will now work, as a radio production organisation rather than a broadcaster, in order to provide music and speech programming that is culturally relevant to UK radio listeners.

Day One Radio’s own broadcasts were based on radio audience research undertaken in the West Midlands that showed among the 28% of the whole population, not just Christians, are interested in listening to contemporary Christian and Gospel music.

These same people are also interested in hearing entertaining and interesting speech that is relevant to their family, their lifestyle and their relationships. Seventy percent of these people are interested in programmes on family values & personal relationship and over forty percent of them want to hear programmes about Jesus and the Bible.

We know from our own experience as a broadcaster that there is a dearth of British made programming with a Christian ethos. Other Christian broadcasters have also told us that they currently have to rely mainly on US originated programming for their speech content.

Therefore Day One Radio’s new direction is as a radio programme production organisation producing and distributing programming. We will ensure that these programmes conform to the Ofcom Broadcasting Codes that govern UK broadcasting. 

RECENT HISTORY

In August 2006 Day One Radio began test DAB digital radio broadcasts on the Wolverhampton community access channel making it the first Christian radio station on DAB in the UK. The station broadcast a mix of contemporary Christian and Gospel music plus speech and was operated by a group of volunteers, who have backgrounds in BBC and UK commercial radio.

During 2007, through consultation and prayer with its partners, it became clear that the Day One Radio should change from being a broadcaster to just the Black Country and Shropshire and in future to work with other Christian broadcasters to produce positive and encouraging programmes with a Christian ethos.

Therefore at the end of August 2007 Day One Radio ceased broadcasting.

A meeting was held in Wolverhampton at the All Nations Christian Centre on 29 September 2007 attended by over fifty of our listeners and supporters to tell them about the exciting future for Day One Radio and Heart of the Nation Productions.

The speakers at this meeting were Gary Hoogvliet of UCB International, Ian Mackie CEO of UCB Europe and Peter Wilson of Day One Radio. Ian Mackie showed the meeting a video that contained interviews telling how UCB works with programme makers around the world. Ian said that UCB in the UK was looking forward to working in the future with Day One Radio to produce programmes for their radio stations.

People at the meeting also had the opportunity to be some of the first in the country to hear the test transmissions of UCB’s two radio stations – UCB UK & UCB Inspirational – broadcasting across the West Midlands on DAB.

NEW BROADCAST OPPORTUNITY

Day One Radio now has the opportunity to broadcast programmes produced in our studios in Wolverhampton not only to radio listeners in the UK but, potentially, for radio listeners anywhere in the English-speaking world.
